Dr. Prisca Kasonde has been appointed country director for ICAP in Zambia.

At ICAP’s office in Lusaka, Dr. Kasonde will head a team of more than 20 staff with oversight of five key projects.

“Dr. Kasonde’s wealth of experience in clinical care and program management make her ideal to lead ICAP’s work in Zambia,” said Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, ICAP’s global director. “Her expertise in HIV prevention and treatment, strengthening human resources for health and reproductive health mesh perfectly with ICAP’s key areas of focus in Zambia. I am confident that she will give her deep expertise and extensive experience to contribute to the health and well-being of the people of Zambia.”

Dr. Kasonde is a physician and public health specialist with over 24 years of clinical and program management experience in the areas of HIV/AIDS, STIs, reproductive health, obstetrics and gynecology, and health systems strengthening. She received her medical degree from the Medical Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria, as well as a master’s degree in medicine, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, from the University of Zambia. In addition, she received a master’s degree in public health with a focus on HIV/AIDS epidemiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has co-authored over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and has practiced as a certified clinical trainer for the past 18 years, building the capacity of health workers across technical areas such as PMTCT, ART, family planning, reproductive health, infection prevention, and obstetrics and gynecology.
